Vertical blinds can match everything in your home. No matter how formal the room is, or how casual, you’ll be able to find the perfect style and color.
Vertical window blinds have been around for over sixty years and they have never lost their popularity. When they were first introduced, they made a major style improvement in many urban and suburban homes as wives by the hundreds threw out their old roller shades and installed these new blinds that looked better and allowed more light to shin through.
There are many different materials, and each has its own purpose. The most common is a type of PVC plastic. These are typically the most economical ones around, and they also provide easy cleaning and dusting. Most families with pets and / or children choose these because they are hard to damage.
When the time comes, they are very easy to clean. A damp cloth will usually wipe off just about anything. Spray cleaners do a great job, too. For weekly dusting, which is recommended, choose a specially made duster with disposable covers and just rub it gently along each slat. These almost never stain.
For rooms where you want to make a special statement, custom made blinds are the answer. Even though you can certainly buy these custom styles in a variety of plastics, people usually choose to have them covered in various types of materials such as something that resembles the carpet in that room.
Any blinds with real material will need special cleaning solution. Some just can’t be cleaned well at all. Many come with their own bottle of solution. Before trying to remove dirt or spots, try a little on an inconspicuous area just in case the color does come out. Always ask the store where you bought them for cleaning tips. Almost all vertical window blinds in this category come with cleaning instructions and if you don’t follow these instructions, you may be voiding the warranty.
You will probably have a choice in your openings. Smaller sizes will only be able to open from the left or the right, and you might have a choice of using a string pulley or a plastic wand. Larger sizes can usually open in the middle; these are called ‘double draws’. The larger sizes, the ones that would be used for perhaps patio sliding glass doors, use an entire pulley system off to one side, usually attached to the inside of the wall or window frame. They don’t have wands.
Valances are usually standard. Whether you are installing them inside the window frame or outside, any valance that comes with the blinds usually has no other function than to cover the overhead tracks with the chains and pulleys. However, you will always be able to add your own valance to suit your style.
If you aren’t really good around the house, consider hiring professional help to put them up. At least find a friend who has had experience.
